11 Checking homework

1. Access

  • You can access submitted homework on "My Page" under "To be checked." Note that all homework that has been submitted to TEF will appear here; it may not all be for you to check.
  • You can also access homework via the email you are sent when a student submits something for you to check. Just click on the link or the green button that says "Check homework" and you will be brought to it.

2. To check homework, follow these steps:

  1. Click the title of the homework assignment on "My Page" under "To be checked" or click the link provided in the email notification about homework.
  2. You will be brought to the homework assignment.
  3. Click "Edit" at the top.
  4. You will be brought to a page that will allow you to make corrections and edit the piece. Just directly correct anything that is incorrect. Don't forget to edit the title if there is a mistake!
  5. Give the homework assignment a leaf rating. Use your judgment, but it is usually a good idea to be a bit more generous with your rating, as students don't have to do homework and we would like to encourage them to do so!
  6. Click "Save" to continue working on it later if you have not finished making your corrections, but don't want to lose what you have done so far. It will not be sent to the student.
  7. Click "Save & Return To Student" when you have finished checking it. An email will be sent to the student to let them know you have checked it. You can still make changes after this point if you realize you have made a mistake. Just click on the title of the assignment and click "Edit" again. Make your changes and hit "Save."
  8. You will be brought to a page with the final corrections. It will be a side-by-side view so the student can easily see what changes you made.
  9. Leave a comment to the student down below. It's important that you DO leave a comment (if you don't leave a comment and the student does, you won't get an email notification).
    • The comment can be as detailed as you would like it to be! If you want to explain some of your corrections, you can do that. You do not have to! You can just say something like this:  "Dear [student's name], Thanks for trying your homework! I made a few corrections, so let me know if you have any questions at all. You can leave a comment down below or ask me next lesson. See you in class! Best, [your name]."

3. Other important information about homework:

  • It is best to try to check it as soon as you can. This sometimes is not possible, so our policy is 72 hours. If you can't check it within 72 hours of it being sent, it is up for grabs for another teacher to check it for you. This is to avoid homework from getting too stale. If you see stale homework, feel free to go ahead and check it. Out of courtesy, just send a message to the teacher who was supposed to check it on Skype to let them know. If you know in advance that you won't be able to check homework sent to you in a timely fashion, post a message on TEF All Staff Skype chat group to see if anyone can help you out.
  • Homework is paid. You are paid a flat rate at 20% of your lesson rate for each piece of homework you check. The system automatically keeps track of the homework you have checked, so you don't need to book a lesson with yourself for this task. It should take you about 5 minutes to check it.
  • There is a character limit of 1000 characters, so you will never have to check something very long.
