Listening to your inner voice

Don’t let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. —Steve Jobs

Your own unique perspective is what makes you an asset at work and in your community. Trust yourself and listen to your intuition. It's those that listen to their inner voice that are the visionaries of our world.

Language point:

When we hear the word "drown", we immediately think of being surrounded by water, not able to breathe. Now, imagine yourself swimming (not drowning!) underwater, unable to hear anything from the outside world. That's what "drown out" means—to be loud enough to block the sound of something else.

The sound of the telephone was drowned out by the vacuum cleaner.

The music was playing at a good volume and did not drown out the conversation.

Did you know? While "drowning" itself sounds terrifying, we can also use it as a metaphor. For example, "I have so much work to do. I'm drowning in paperwork!"
