Social media content priority list

When copy editing, remember to think about

  • How important is this?
    - Is this piece permanent or transient?
    - Will it be used and read repeatedly?
    - Is the ROI worth it? (Does it generate enough money for the company?)
  • How much time did it take the writer to write the content? The copy editing should not take longer than what it took the writer to write in most cases.
  1.  Any other localized content such as site landing pages, brochures, etc. / email or Skype 

    Why?
    - They'll be looked at the most by existing and potential clients (HR staff and/or indy students). There should not be any misleading information in the localized version. 
    - They are semi-permanent

    Time frame: as much as necessary.
     

  2. English copy editing of social media posts & Instagram posts

    Because we are an English school.

    P.S. For social media posts, edit for:
    - punctuation/grammar/spelling errors
    - accuracy of content 
    - clarity 
    - add anything you can add from your bilingual perspective that would be helpful/interesting for students in the Notes section

    The social media post checklist (idioms)

    Time frame: 5 - 10 min, unless there needs to be a big change. Remember to be decisive :)
     

  3. News post localization

    - It's news about TEF, and it goes out in the weekly newsletter (the Japanese is on it too).
    - It is a full translation of the actual news post. BUT it is a localized version, so as long as the nuance and facts are correct, it's fine. 

    E.g. English: You will need a basic level of grammar and business English to take this course. It is for intermediate students and above.

    Bad localization (in English): You will need a basic level of grammar and business English to take this course. It is for intermediate students and above. (too abrupt in Japanese)

    Bad localization (in English): You can try it if even if you are at a beginner business English level, but it is highly recommended for intermediate students and above. (not true; misleading; some people will be dissuaded by this, but others will take it as they can totally try it)

    Good localization (in English): Because you will need to do X, Y, and Z in this course, you will need a basic level of grammar and business English to take this course. It is for intermediate students and above.

    Time frame: 15 - 30 min
     

  4. Blog post localized teasers

    - It stays on the site (it's the summary on the JP version of the blog).
    - It goes in the newsletter.
    - The same comment gets recycled and used on Facebook and Twitter.
    - Sometimes people come to TEF because of the blogs. 

    Time frame: 5 - 15 min
     

  5. Social media post & discussion post teasers

    - Super transient, so don't try to perfect anything. Just make sure it's actually talking about the idiom/discussion post. 
    - The idiom comment is supposed to lead social media users to read the rest of the content on the site, so if you can add to that, awesome!
