Rates of pay

Payment is made at the beginning of the month for the month prior. You will be paid by bank transfer if you are in NZ. Otherwise, you will be paid by Wise (formerly Transferwise). Details of this are explained in the form you are sent once you sign your contract.

You are paid per lesson and per assessment or homework check according to the following schedule:

Level Base per lesson (JPY) Gross per lesson (JPY) Per homework (JPY) Per assessment (JPY)
1 750 870 150 250
2 800 928 150 250
3 850 986 150 300
4 900 1044 200 300
5 950 1102 200 350
6 1000 1160 200 350
7 1050 1218 250 350
8 1100 1276 250 400

The gross rate includes the following, which are paid pro rata:

  1. holiday pay (8%);
  2. sick pay (4%); and
  3. public holidays (4%).

This is shown on your payslip. These rates are calculated taking the legal requirements from NZ law (for example, 11 public holidays per year) as a percentage of total working days in a year (usually 260ish depending on the year).

If you write lesson content or blog posts, you will be paid your per lesson rate for the time spent writing that content.

Training is paid at your per lesson rate.

If a student does not show up to the lesson, and they have given less than 12 hours notice (i.e. have not cancelled), you are paid for that class at your usual rate. We ask that you use that time productively to write lesson content, blog posts or do other work that contributes to our school (e.g. contacting students that have not taken classes with you in a while).

Note:

  1. Qualified and experienced English teachers enter at level 6.
  2. Per lesson rates are for 30 minutes (25 minutes of lesson time and the 5-minute interval between lessons, which is to be used for lesson records and lesson preparation. See the following document on breaks for more information.
  3. Pay in your currency is calculated using the 1-year average exchange rate. This is pulled directly from this site https://www.ofx.com/en-nz/forex-news/historical-exchange-rates/ and the reasoning is explained here: https://theenglishfarm.com/forums/teachers-lounge/administration/change… Please note that the 1-year average is a moving average. It is not constant.
  4. Note that Paypal applies its own spot rates over which we have no control.
