The biggest environmental problem my hometown faces is the lingering effects of the collapse of a large salt mine in the 1990s. When it collapsed, a lot of salt drained into underground water supplies, and sinkholes developed around the area. The company installed a water filtration system which helped, but there was still a lot of salination that hurt farms, especially. The company installed a water filtration system that ran for many years. Recently the company decided filtration was no longer needed, and the county officials agreed, so they shut down the filtration system. A lot of people are worried that the salt will come back if the water isn't filtered. So, in a nutshell, the mine used to be a big employer in the area, but now it's just a big problem.
