If you want to work at a global consulting firm in Japan, your English skills do matter, even if the company doesn’t officially list them as a requirement. Most top firms assess your real-world communication ability, and while many still ask for TOEIC scores, others use tests like GBC. Once you're assigned to international projects, strong English becomes essential.

So, what do major firms actually expect?

McKinsey
English is a firm requirement. While a TOEIC score of 780+ is common, what really matters is your ability to communicate ideas clearly in interviews and meetings. McKinsey also assesses your English through its problem-solving and case interview process. Can you explain your reasoning in fluent English under pressure?

Bain
Bain requires business-level fluency in both Japanese and English. For non-Japanese applicants, JLPT N1 or native-level Japanese is essential. They look beyond test scores and value communication, cultural fit, and teamwork. Can you build trust and collaborate effectively in English?

BCG
English is important, especially for client-facing work and global projects. While it might not be listed as a requirement, business-level English is expected, and many candidates are evaluated through live interviews or English screening tools, such as the GBC test. Are you ready to communicate your ideas with clarity and confidence?

Deloitte
Deloitte often uses TOEIC scores as a benchmark, usually around 730 minimum, with 900+ considered a strong asset. However, communication and a strong understanding of business are just as important. Expect practical English assessments during hiring. Can you discuss business strategy in English during a meeting?

Accenture
English may not be officially required for all roles. Some hires have had TOEIC scores in the 400s. But for global projects, business-level English is absolutely expected. Some roles even recommend TOEIC 855+ or equivalent ability. Can you lead a virtual team or write a client report in English?

Test scores are just the beginning

TOEIC and other English tests are important for your resume. But they don’t fully prepare you for consulting work. As a consultant, you will need to:

  • Summarize complex ideas clearly

  • Present recommendations to global clients

  • Write professional reports and emails

  • Handle questions and feedback smoothly

These are job skills, not test-taking skills.
