Techniques for teaching fluency

At The English Farm, we often teach students how to work towards spoken fluency. It's a key part of the Speaking Test Strategies course, the G.B.C. test, and a major edge we have over online schools who employ less experienced teachers.

I (Jeremy) realized that I teach the same things to different students over and over. There are the things I teach. They are not the only, or even possibly the best way to teach them, but gaining a different perspective is a good way to improve. Also, feel free to take any tricks or techniques and make them your own.

Each video is about 5-6 minutes long and covers one topic.

This first video is about the basics of fluency, found in STS 6-10. It focuses tone, a bit that's easy to understand and produce but hard to implement in full answers or regular speech. (By the way, techniques that are easy to understand but hard to implement are the perfect way to get the student to come back for another class.)

This next video is about word length. This is easy to understand, but a lot of students have a slightly harder time producing it compared to tone.

Next, I want to work on rhythm. A lot of very high-level students appreciate this. Even I could speak with better rhythm!

Finally, let's dig into pronunciation a little. I don't mean those white whales L/R or TH. I mean achievable pronunciation that will have a big impact on fluency and overall output.

Again, these are not the only ways to teach, they are just a few examples of successful ways to teach these topics. If you have anything to add or any advice, let the staff know.
