As a teacher, you are given the power to issue refunds, and they are at your discretion. You also decide whether or not you should be paid for lessons for which you offer a refund.
In general, we want to make sure that students and teachers are happy. If you feel that a student deserves a refund because they did not have a satisfying experience, give them a refund. If you somehow did not do your job or meet your obligations, and you feel it is your responsibility, then indicate that you don't need to be paid for the class.
When you issue a refund, please make sure you explain the reasons in the lesson feedback comment for the student to see. Furthermore, do NOT mark the student absent.
Here are a few typical scenarios:
Scenario | Refund | Teacher payment |
---|---|---|
Student fails to show for first lesson | Yes | Yes |
Teacher has tech trouble | Yes | You decide |
Student asks to cancel last minute* | No | No |
Student has tech trouble | No | Yes |
Teacher is late | Yes | No |
Class was interrupted on teacher's side | Yes | You decide |
* Note that this is the kindness-of-your-heart case, when you want to do a favour for your student. For example, if a regular student of yours is clearly ill or has a sudden family emergency. If the class has already started, you should write a lesson report and issue a refund there. If the class has not started yet, just delete the lesson from your schedule, and the student will be refunded and you will not be paid for that lesson.
