Introduction

As mentioned earlier, this course uses spaced review, meaning you don't review what you just learned. Rather, you review what you learned a few lessons ago.

Warm Up

Without looking back in your notes, try to remember a few phrases from units 9 and 11 in this course.

  • Unit 9 was about adding emphasis.
  • Unit 11 was about expressing strong opinions.

If you need help, your instructor can guide you.

Make sure to select the phrases you want to use, then keep practicing them until you are absolutely confident.

It is not necessary for students to remember all the points in each unit, but they should remember at least two or three.

Everyone has words and phrases they enjoy using. Make sure your student's favorite phrases are not just things they learned in high school, but are sophisticated phrases that leave a good impression.

It is recommended to choose only a few phrases in total to add to the student's active vocabulary. Practicing a few phrases many times will ensure they can use the phrases under pressure.

Transitions 9 Adding emphasis

  1. The first thing to remember is... — There may be many important aspects to this issue, but this one is essential to keep in mind.
  2. It’s important to realize that... — This is another important point.
  3. One point that is often overlooked is that... — People often forget this, but I think it is important.
  4. As a matter of fact... — What I’m about to say is definitely true.
  5. Not to mention... — This is another thing I think is important, and I want to emphasize it.
  6. Of course... — This is obvious.

Transitions 11 Expressing strong opinions

  1. Clearly... — Everyone can see this.
  2. There is no question in my mind that... — I'm convinced that what I'm about to say is true.
  3. It goes without saying that... — This is obvious, and everyone knows it.
  4. There can be no doubt whatsoever that... — This is 100% true.
  5. It is undeniable that... — It is certain.
  6. Nothing could be further from the truth — What I said previously is totally wrong, and now I'm going to tell you how it really is.

Here are a few more phrases to give a strong opinion not included in the student-facing portion of the lesson:

  1. There is (absolutely) no doubt in my mind that...
  2. Few (people) would deny that...
  3. Needless to say... [this is basically a stronger version of "of course"]

If your student has no trouble with the above phrases, here are other ways of expressing opinions

  1. To my mind...
  2. As I see it...
  3. From my perspective...
  4. From my point of view...
  5. The way I see it...
