Introduction

Is this logical? Why or why not?

  • If you go outside without a coat, you’ll catch a cold and infect the rest of the team. Then your team would not be able to work and they will miss project deadlines and the client will part with the company.
  • All the companies around us are using the new marketing software, so it must be good. We need to use it too, to stay competitive.

THE SITUATION

Nature's Legacy Initiative (NLI) is a conservation-focused NGO dedicated to preserving and restoring critical ecosystems.

The ongoing degradation of natural ecosystems is one of the primary drivers of the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, GHI was founded in 2011 during the International Year of Forests to promote large-scale environmental preservation. Over the next decade, NLI aims to protect significant areas of land and ocean, emphasizing biodiversity as a core priority. Their strategy includes restoring degraded habitats and creating sustainable land-use plans that integrate biodiversity goals. Biodiversity is vital for human well-being. It provides essential services such as clean air, water security, and food production. Investing in biodiversity directly supports poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Unfortunately, biodiversity loss continues to accelerate, endangering its ecological, cultural, and economic benefits. Reversing these trends requires large-scale projects, which are resource-intensive, legally complex, and involve extensive collaboration between stakeholders such as local communities, governments, NGOs, and private donors.

THE PROBLEM

NLI has chosen the mangrove forests of Indonesia for its next major conservation project. The region also holds great potential for ecotourism, which focuses on sustainable travel to natural areas. Ecotourism attracts visitors who seek to experience pristine environments while ensuring minimal ecological disruption.

Currently, four communities in the region have basic tourism infrastructure and host approximately 200,000 visitors annually. By enhancing conservation efforts and upgrading ecotourism facilities, the following projections were made:

  • Annual visitor numbers to these towns are expected to increase by 30% over the next five years
  • The average stay for visitors will double from three to six days
  • Visitor spending per person per day will remain constant at $150

How much additional revenue will ecotourism generate in these four communities five years from now?
