Basic argumentation & fluency

1–5 WHAT TO SAY (basics of making an argument) 

  1. How to do your best; how to think about test answers.
  2. Structure—beginning and .ending
  3. Evidence—5 different types, and how to use them.
  4. Reasoning—how to add it to evidence.
  5. Review of the above

6–10 HOW TO SAY IT (basics of fluency)

  1. How to fake fluency; the quickest wins.
  2. Eliminating non-word sounds.
  3. Rhythm and intonation—starting to pay attention to this.
  4. Confidence and enthusiasm.
  5.  Review of the above.

GCAS Part 1

11–16 DISCUSSION (How to engage in discussions)

  1. Elevator pitch—giving a winning elevator pitch.
  2. Agreeing—how to agree with opinions.
  3. Disagreeing—how to disagree.
  4. Anecdotes—how to use personal stories to back up opinions.
  5. Facts—how to use facts and data to support an argument.
  6. Review of Part 1.

GCAS Part 2

17–22 PRESENTATIONS (How to present information)

  1. Active preparation—how to prepare to present.
  2. Transitions and directions—how to draw people's attention to specific information.
  3. Describing numbers—how to say big numbers, fractions and percentages; and using comparatives and superlatives.
  4. Describing trends—how to talk about change over time.
  5. Analysis—how to analyze the information you present.
  6. Review of Part 2.

GCAS Part 3

23–27 PROBLEM-SOLVING (How to engage in discussions of workplace issues and give solutions)

  1. Active preparation—how to gather information and make an argument.
  2. Strong opinions—how to give strong opinions.
  3. How to disagree—how to play devil's advocate and disagree openly.
  4. Responding politely—how to respond politely through hedging and staying on the same team.
  5. Review of Part 3.
