There are a lot of words and phrases in the engineering book that you may not use in your day-to-day life. That's okay. There is a glossary file attached for you to download.

Please try to do each of these in every lesson:

  • Ask your student to explain engineering topics. Use "layperson terms" as well as the engineering ones in the book.
  • Discuss the pros and cons of engineering ideas.
  • Ask about the student's experience—"Have you worked on anything like this in the past?"
  • Ask about the student's goals—"Can you imagine working on anything like this in the future?"

Do not rush through this book, but rather use it to help your student communicate confidently.

You may often have to say, "That makes sense, but I didn't hear any of the target language from the book. Can you try again using more sophisticated engineering language?"
