Quick guide to the Collocations books

There are a lot of collocations in this book.

Here's how to remember them.

Pick useful or practical collocations

  • Don’t treat all collocations as equally useful.
  • Let the student choose which to focus on or recommend ones to practice.
  • Say a useful pair at least 5 TIMES quickly to create an association between the words.
  • Use connected speech: —eg: “it’s highly recommended = — “HAI-li-RE-k’-men-d’d”

Give multiple examples

  • After picking your favourites, give a couple of examples and get your student to give a couple too:
    • Eg: “highly competitive”
      • Teacher: “Getting into Oxford University is highly competitive… Getting bread at my favourite bakery is highly competitive—it always sells out.”
      • Student: “[gives two examples]”
