Now is the time

Planting a tree on top of stack of coins
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

Sometimes in life, there is time for reflection. We have the space to look back on the choices we've made and consider what we want for the future. Sometimes, we think about the things we wish we had done and it feels too late, as if life has passed us by. This proverb speaks to those who feel like they've missed opportunities in life. It's for people who say "it's too late" or "I'm stuck" or "I've missed the boat".

What "tree" do you wish you'd already planted? Perhaps you wish you had gone back to school, made a career change or started healthier habits, like running. Yes, the best time to start running was 20 (or 10 or 5) years ago, but the second best time is now. Just walk out your door, take that first step and soon you'll be kilometers down the road!

Language Point:

Another way to say second best is "next best". In a negotiation, the Next Best Alternative (NBA) is what you use when an agreement has not been reached. Both parties involved in the negotiation have an NBA, which is why it's important that you understand the other party's NBA as soon as possible. Moving quickly in this situation will help keep the other party interested.

So, whether we are talking about planting metaphorical trees or successful negotiations, move forward and find a resolution.
