The Vocabulary section tests your overall vocabulary, and having a varied vocabulary will allow you to express your ideas effectively. Students often lose points because they repeat the same words instead of using synonyms.

Keep in mind that the GBC scores are phrased in the negative, for example, “lacked basic words/phrases.” But you can simply take out the negative language, and just think about key word. In this case, “Use of basic words/phrases.”

Here are some ways to improve each of your communication of information scores.

Use of basic words/phrases

  • You may not fully understand even basic words. For instance, the word "get" has many uses. Which words collocate with "get"? How many phrasal verbs with get do you know?
  • Familiarize yourself with using the most common words used in English.
  • Here are the 100 most common English words.

Finding the right word

  • Only use vocabulary that you have practiced.
  • Students lose marks in the GBC test when they use words incorrectly or take a long time coming up with the right word.
  • Use fillers such as “what’s the right word?” or “it’s on the tip of my tongue” if you need time to think.

Using the right form of the word

  • Make sure to use the right form of the word, be it a noun, verb, adjective or adverb.
  • English has thousands of word families, or words that have multiple forms.

Selecting effective vocabulary

  • Avoid overusing simple adjectives (i.e. very good. Say "excellent" or "incredible" instead).
  • Using specific vocabulary is one of the easiest ways to show off your language skills and see your score improve.

Using business/practical expressions

  • Use vocabulary and phrases that are specific to the business world, especially when answering questions related to your work, business or industry.

How do I improve?

Remember that the G.B.C. is a speaking test so you must use the words you know. Please review new vocabulary with your teacher and practice new language in your lessons. The best way to improve your overall vocabulary is by reading and looking up words you do not understand in a dictionary.
